THE DECORATORS CLUB EDUCATION FUND (DCEF) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Decorators Club Education Fund, Inc. (DCEF) was established in 1960 to support interior design education. Historically, the Fund sponsored two different competition programs that award monetary grants to students in six New York area college interior design programs. These grants are made possible by the proceeds from fundraising events and our Jacqueline Beymer Lebenthal Lecture Series, established in 1991, and by the generosity of corporate, media and individual sponsors.

Beginning in 2022, the DCEF has sponsored students enrolled in high school and pre-college programs at five NYC area design schools.

We are honored and thrilled to support @prattinstitute and the Pratt Young Scholars program. Pratt Young Scholars is a need-based, three-year scholarship program providing studio instruction in art and design, along with college preparation to motivated high school students. Through innovative and challenging studio experiences, this program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue advanced studies in art and design. Scholars participate in three years of required studio classes and electives. In addition to studio instruction, the Pratt Young Scholars program provides SAT preparation, essay writing, and one-on-one guidance throughout the college application and financial aid process to students. Throughout the program, instructors and mentors highlight higher educational opportunities and careers in the creative fields.

The New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is thrilled to be partnering with The Decorators Club Education Fund this year. Thanks to the generosity of the Decorators Club, five high school students from underserved communities will receive scholarships to participate in NYSID’s Pre-College program in 2023/24. We are pleased to name the scholarships The Decorators Cub Discover Scholarship in honor of this gift, and the recipients of the scholarship will be recognized as The Decorators Club Scholars

For over twenty years, NYSID has been offering a summer immersion program in the fundamentals of interior design for high school students called the Pre-College Program.  Participating students learn the basics of interior design and design thinking from professional designers who teach in NYSID’s undergraduate and graduate programs. The program, which provides hands-on experience and role models from the industry, consists of two 2-week sessions – Pre-College I and Pre-College II.   Participating students design for a theoretical client, creating drawings, layouts, mood-boards and selecting furniture, fixtures and textiles. The introductory session (Pre-College I) challenges students to design a one-bedroom apartment. In the advanced session (Pre-College II), students design a hotel lobby.  On-site and virtual visits to New York City design firms and showrooms are incorporated into the program, and students present their designs to a panel of design professionals at the conclusion of each session.

NYSID truly appreciates the opportunity to partner with the Decorator’s Club.  This support will enable young people living in underserved communities to learn more about interior design as a career option, and supports the College’s goal of making a career in interior design accessible to a broader demographic.
